Alberta PNP Launches New Immigration Streams
On February 16, 2022, Alberta announced several changes to its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). These changes are part of the “Alberta Advantage Immigration Strategy” to attract global skills and talent, diversify the provincial economy, and support newcomers. Alberta also recently announced results from an Express Entry stream draw on February 1. The appeal invited 400 Express Entry nominees with CRS scores as low as 340.
What were the changes in the Alberta PNP?
The first change reported was the renaming of the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (“AINP”) to the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (“AAIP”). Also, three existing entrepreneur streams were renamed:
- The International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream is now the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream.
- The Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa Stream is now the Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, and
- The Self-Employed Farmer Stream is now the Farm Stream.
The requirements for existing programs and pathways remain unchanged. However, moving forward, candidates who have applied to be nominated by the province via Alberta’s online portal must now submit any future nomination extension requests using the portal. In addition to the above, Alberta reported the creation of two new rural immigration streams for Permanent Residence:
- The Rural Entrepreneur Stream, and
- The Rural Renewal Stream.
These new Rural Streams target population growth, decrease workforce shortages and distribute immigration to aging rural Albertan communities. Eligible rural communities are those outside the Calgary and Edmonton Metropolitan Area, with a population of less than 100,000.
The Rural Entrepreneur Stream is an immigration pathway for people who want to buy or start a new business in a select rural community in Alberta. Candidates can submit an Expression of Interest to be ranked by the stream’s points grid if they meet the program’s minimum eligibility requirements. The province immigration authorities may invite the highest-ranking candidates to submit a Business Application to receive a provincial nomination.
The Rural Renewal Stream is designed for candidates with a job offer in a select rural community from the designated employer who must be in a specified rural community. To apply under this stream, the eligible candidates must meet community-specific requirements (Having an ‘Endorsement of Candidate letter’) and stream-specific requirements.
