Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) – More Immigrants Settling In Canada

According to a recent Statistics Canada study, the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)’s effectiveness can be credited to the high immigrant retention rates in Atlantic Canada. Newcomers are primarily from China and India. In the past several years, more immigrants have chosen to call the Atlantic province home than in any other period in the previous 20 years. With the highest retention rate in recent memory, more people are also staying.

According to census data, 3.5 percent of immigrants to Canada’s Atlantic provinces will reside there in 2021, up from 1.2 percent in 2006. The Governments, employers, communities, and settlement agencies collaborate to hire qualified workers and foreign graduates under the AIP introduced in 2017 as a pilot program. Immigration recipients who work with settlement service providers get more excellent assistance in settling and integrating than they may if they enter Canada via a different immigration program.

The study, partly funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), discovered that the Atlantic Immigration Program was more effective at keeping immigrants than Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) one year after they arrived. According to the data, immigrant retention rates in the Atlantic provinces dramatically increased over the first three years of the AIP. In contrast, retention rates have decreased in other provinces.

The highest increase in retention under the AIP occurred in Nova Scotia. Prince Edward Island had the lowest retention rate in the country but had the most significant increase in admissions between 2010-2015. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador also had high retention rates under the program.

What is the Atlantic immigration program in Canada?

Canada encourages applications for permanent residence from people with abilities, education, and work experience that will contribute to the Canadian economy. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIPP) was initially launched in 2017 as a three-year pilot program to allow Atlantic provincial governments to choose immigrants according to the province’s economic needs. This pilot project aims to attract and retain skilled immigrants in Atlantic Canada by testing innovative approaches to permanent immigration. The AIPP was in place until December 31, 2021. Then, the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) replaced the AIPP. The applicants can now submit their permanent residence application to the program.

How does AIP work?

To immigrate to Atlantic Canada through the AIP, Foreign Nationals (applicants) must be recent graduates of a publicly funded institution in Atlantic Canada or skilled workers who meet the program requirements.

First, the applicants must have an official job offer from a designated employer for at least 12 months under National Occupational Classification (NOC) Skill Level 0, A, B, or C. Usually, to receive a Canadian job offer valid for immigration purposes, the applicant must get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) that is not required for the AIP. Instead, the job offer must be from a Designated Employer.

Second, the applicants must meet the eligibility requirements (Work Experience, Education, Language Proficiency, and Proof of Funds) for one of the program streams. These requirements vary depending on which of the three streams of the AIP an applicant uses:

  1. High-Skilled Workers Stream
  2. Intermediate-Skilled Workers Stream
  3. International Graduates Stream

Getting a Settlement Plan: After you get a job offer (At least one year in duration AND management, professional, technical/skilled, or intermediate job AND full-time AND non-seasonal), you require to get a settlement plan that will help you and your family adapt to your new home in Atlantic Canada. It will provide valuable resources and contacts to help you feel welcome in your new community at no cost.

Getting a Certificate of Endorsement: The province must endorse your job offer. Your employer will handle this process. You’ll receive a Certificate of Endorsement if the area approves your job offer.
