IRCC Canada extends free emergency visas for Ukrainians living abroad

IRCC Canada extends the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET). On March 31, the temporary expedited visa and temporary resident permit program for Ukrainians was scheduled to end. Now, they have till the end of July to apply.

Background

The CUAET, which went into effect on March 17, 2022, gives Ukrainians and members of their immediate families, regardless of nationality, a chance to live temporarily in Canada for up to 3 years. Also, they are qualified for a free open work or study permit to apply for employment with virtually any Canadian employer or enrol in a Canadian educational program.

Today IRCC Canada announced that the Canadian government had extended the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET). It means anyone with a CUAET visa will have until March 31, 2024, to travel to Canada under special measures. CUAET holders already in Canada will have until March 31, 2024, to extend or adjust their temporary status through these measures, free of charge. Ukrainians and their family will also have until July 15, 2023, to apply for a CUAET visa overseas.

Following July 15, 2023, Ukrainians who want to immigrate to Canada from another country can continue using IRCC Canada’s regular temporary resident programs to apply for a TRV visa, work permit, or study permit. Still, there will be costs and standard requirements.

Candidates looking to move to permanent residency through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC Canada)’s current programs may benefit from the extended visitor, work or study status provided by the CUAET and settlement services, including skills identification and language training.

IRCC Canada received over 944,000 applications for the emergency travel programme between March 17, 2022, and March 16, 2023, of which more than 616,000 were approved. As of March 16, more than 133,000 people had entered Canada.

After arriving in Canada, Ukrainians and their family members will still be eligible for the one-time transitional financial help. They will have access to emergency housing for up to two weeks if necessary. After they come, Ukrainians and their families will still have access to settlement programs, allowing them to integrate properly into Canadian society.

As Ukrainians leave Russia’s illegitimate conflict, the Canadian government remains committed to collaborating closely with provincial, territorial, and municipal partners, settlement service providers, and the Ukrainian-Canadian community.

These efforts expand on earlier ones taken by the IRCC Canada government to help Ukraine’s security and resiliency and hold Russia responsible for its crimes and atrocities. We are paying great attention to the continuous requirements of Ukrainians, and we will modify our response as necessary.
