Immigrate To Canada As A Truck Driver – A Complete Guide
Truck drivers are more necessary than ever. Through 2025, Canada will require more than 17,000 new truck drivers per year to balance out the supply and demand. This is your chance to enter the market and grow in your profession, to put it another way.
Is there an actual demand for truck drivers in Canada?
There will always be a need for qualified truck drivers because Canada depends on freight trucks to transport its goods. In fact, according to data from Trucking HR Canada (THRC), the overall number of trucking job openings across the Canadian economy is predicted to increase to 55,000 by 2024.
With the introduction of the new NOC codes on November 16th,2022, which included a teer code for transport truck drivers, IRCC announced that truck drivers became eligible for Canada Express Entry System. This encourages those who want to become truck drivers and immigrate to Canada. The occupation class will now be changed from semi-skilled to skilled under the new system.
What are available PR for truck drivers in Canada?
If you enjoy driving trucks, you can immigrate to Canada in one of the following ways:
1-Express Entry Program (Federal Skilled Program)
The Canadian government organizes and processes applications for skilled professionals who want to immigrate to Canada and get Canadian permanent residence (Canada PR) status through the online system known as Express Entry. The system manages the Federal Skilled Program (FSW), one of three major federal economic programs.
The candidate must first meet the requirements of FSW to be eligible to place in a pool of candidates for immigration. They may complete an online Express Entry profile identifying their skills and qualifications. Then, the Express Entry system uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank the applicants against other applicants in the pool on a points-based system considering a variety of factors, including age, education, work experience (Abroad and Canadian work experience), language proficiency in English and French, family members and details on any job offer. The IRCC holds periodic draws every two weeks and invites the highest-ranking candidates to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence (Canada PR visa).
2-PNPs as a Truck Driver under Express Entry Canada
There are two ways to apply.
- The applicants contact the province or territory and apply for a nomination under their Express Entry stream. They get a nomination through their account, which they accept electronically. If the province or territory agrees to nominate them, they create an Express Entry profile (or update it if they already have one) and show they have been set.
OR
- The applicants create an Express Entry profile and show the provinces and territories they are interested in. They apply to their Express Entry stream” If they are nominated, “they will offer it to them through their account and accept it electronically. If a province or territory sends a “notification of interest” to their account, they contact them directly.
You must meet the province or territory’s eligibility requirements in either case. Send an electronic application to IRCC if you receive an invitation to apply (ITA). Additionally, you need to create an Express Entry profile and demonstrate that you meet all of Express Entry’s minimal requirements, including being qualified for one of the immigration programs it manages.
3- PNP's as a Truck Driver - Non-Express Entry (Paper-based process)
You apply to the province or territory for nomination under a non-Express Entry stream. You need to meet the eligibility requirements of the area that nominates you. Once set, you submit a paper application for permanent residence to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. Application processing times are longer than through Express Entry.
For truck drivers wishing to settle down and grow their careers in Canada, it’s a fantastic option. You can move to a particular Canadian province or territory through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), non-Express Entry. There are distinct PNP streams available for some specialized and in-demand jobs. For instance, Saskatchewan’s Long-Haul Truck Driver Project aims to let transportation companies hire foreign truck drivers. The best aspect of this program is the possibility of obtaining Canadian permanent residency (Canada PR visa). You can get to Canada much more quickly and get work using this pathway, and it also raises your CRS score by 600 points.
Depending on each province or territory, different qualifications may be needed to become a truck driver in Canada. However, they usually have prerequisites like a diploma from a secondary school, proof of the necessary driving skills, and the required licence. Your chances of being nominated under the PNP rely on the province’s needs because the program is province-specific. To ensure they move to a province with the most work opportunities, prospective individuals should keep an eye on relevant job postings in the provinces they are interested in and stay current with those provinces’ demands.
4-Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)
This employer-driven program enables Canadian employers to hire foreign nationals who can fill the skill shortage in a province or territory. Before seeking foreign talent, employers are encouraged to explore the local Canadian market to fill the labour gap. Foreign workers who are successful under this program may require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which proves that your employer is authorized to hire an immigrant as a temporary foreign worker.
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) enables Canadian employers to hire foreign nationals to fill provincial and territorial labour needs. A TFWP gives the temporary holder status and the opportunity to gain Canadian Permanent Residency. A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) could sometimes be required. An LMIA is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) assessing the impact of hiring a foreign national in Canada. In addition, with skilled occupations, spouses are eligible for work permits making the transition to a new life in Canada easier.
Foreigners seeking temporary employment in Canada are eligible for the TFWP, a temporary work visa. The Canadian government established it to allow firms to hire foreign workers if they cannot fill open positions with Canadians. You’re only permitted to work for one employer in Canada. Extensions may be given if you’ve chosen to switch jobs, employment, employers, or other work-related factors. To be eligible for a TFWP, you must:
- Have a job offer from a Canadian employer
- Hold a valid passport.
- Prove your intention to leave Canada after your work permit expires
- Demonstrate your command of English or French
- Have no criminal history and pose no threat to Canada’s national security
- Demonstrate you’ll be able to sustain yourself while in Canada and pay for your and your family members’ return trip
- Be healthy
Your firm must have a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) document, which explains that it could not locate qualified candidates nationwide. If you meet the abovementioned conditions, you can submit your TFWP application.
The Application process
You have confirmed your eligibility for the program and position you are applying for. Now, regardless of the program you select, follow the steps below to apply for your truck driver job:
Step 1: Find Your NOC (Transport Truck drivers: NOC TEER 7511)
Step 2: Check Your Eligibility

Am a mechanical engineer for Japanese truck and also a truck driver
Hi , Great. Please the self-assessment form to be evaluated for immigration to Canada. Thanks
You really need to be careful when hiring truck drivers from outside Canada, or we will have another accident like the “Humboldt Broncos” bus crash. Also I am a third generation trucker and have been trucking myself for 20 years now, and the industry is in its worst place it’s been ever been. The cost of fuel, the carbon tax, and the lack of freight needing to be shipped is at an all time low. I’m an owner operating and I’m lucky to even get a load, and I’m usually dead heading on the return trip (driving home empty with no pay). The jobs that are offered are jobs that no body wants for a reason! We don’t need more drivers cuz it only makes it harder on actual Canadian citizens!
Thanks for your comments.

If you have a commercial driver’s licence from another country and would like to immigrate to Canada as a truck driver, you must get a commercial driver’s licence. To do so, you must complete Mandatory entry-level training at an approved training center before taking your road test.
We can help you find the authorized center and get the Canada study visa by drafting the purpose of your visit to Canada, which is the primary visa refusal reason to increase your chance of approval. Thanks
