Modernizing Canada’s Immigration System
Immigration is the key element of the Canadian economy, allowing us to address labour needs and support our community’s success. Newcomers have been essential in addressing some of our labour shortages throughout the pandemic. Nevertheless, there remain challenges, including Immigration Processing Delays, that must be addressed accordingly.
On January 31, 2022, IRCC announced measures to enhance the client experience and modernize the immigration system to reach the more predictable processing times that immigrants expect and deserve.
So, the Government of Canada suggested $85 million in new funding to reduce application inventories and wait time. The investment will help with additional staffing and digitizing applications, allowing IRCC to return to processing service standards in different streams by the end of this year, including for study permits, work permits, and permanent residency applications.
IRCC also works to decrease processing times for visitor visas and proof of citizenship. To help accelerate our processing work, IRCC is expanding the use of advanced data analytics to support officers in sorting and processing visitor visa applications submitted from outside Canada. Not to mention, an IRCC officer will always make the final decision. Still, this system will improve client service by allowing IRCC to manage increasing visitor visa applications.
To support permanent residence applicants, IRCC will develop the digital application portal to include more clients in the summer of 2022. The transition to an online application process will minimize delays associated with processing paper applications and supply clients with immediate confirmation that their application was successfully submitted.
For citizenship applicants, IRCC has introduced online testing, created an online application tracker, and launched virtual citizenship ceremonies. IRCC is exploring an option for individuals who wish to self-administer their Oath by signing an attestation and celebrating their citizenship later. This would shorten the waiting time for those at the final stage of their citizenship process.
